The relationship between coping profile and Axis-I psychiatric morbidity in athletes

Conclusion Athletes with psychiatric morbidity at the time of competition were more inclined to using negative emotion-focused coping like helplessness and self-blame, and emotional discharge, and were less apt to use cognitive-focused coping like positive reinterpretation and seeking information and social support than athletes not suffering from psychiatric disorders; this calls sports psychologists and trainers to offer adaptive cognitive and emotion-focused coping techniques to decrease stress and morbidity.
