Ancient woods are being destroyed for development. A consultation is their only hopeMany of Britain ’s ancient woodlands are being threatened by a loophole in national planning policy.Ancient woodlands cover less than 3% of the UK, and have existed since 1600 in England and Wales, and 1750 in Scotland. These are our richest places for wildlife on land, home to more threatened species than any other land habitat, and once destroyed can never be replaced.
