UC Berkeley's massive egg collection aids project up for Webby

(University of California - Berkeley) Why are bird eggs so varied in shape? Some are elliptical, others asymmetrical. Some are both, some -- like the spherical egg of the hawk-owl -- are neither. A team of designers at Science worked with curators at UC Berkeley's Museum of Vertebrate Zoology to categorize egg from 49,000 photos in the collection. They found that egg length and shape relate to body size and flying habits. Their data visualization is now up for a Webby award.
