Publication date: June 2018 Source:Phytochemistry Letters, Volume 25 Author(s): Sheng-Qi Zuo, Ying-Nan Liu, Yang Yang, Zhi-Qiang Guo, Cheng-Xiong Liu, Zhi-Yong Guo, Hai-Bo He, Xuan Tu, Kun Zou Four new furostanol saponins, named aspidsaponins A–D (2–5), together with one known steroidal saponin (1) were isolated from the rhizomes of Aspidistra elatior Blume. Their structures were determined on the basis of chemical methods and spectral data. Compounds 1 and 2, 4 and 5 were two pairs of diastereoisomeric furostanol saponins, and 3-5 were rarely steroidal glycosides of the C4-linked sugar and possessed highly oxidized structural feature. The isolated compounds (1–5) were tested in vitro for their cytotoxic activities against four cancer cell lines A549, Caski, HepG2 and MCF-7. Among them, compounds 1 and 2 showed notable cytotoxic activities against the four cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 3.8–13.8 μM. Graphical abstract
