Novel drug shows promise against acute myeloid leukemia

(Albert Einstein College of Medicine) In a study published online today in Science Translational Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine researchers report that an experimental peptide (small protein) drug shows promise against the often-lethal cancer acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and describe how the drug works at the molecular level. The findings have led to a Phase I/II clinical trial for patients with advanced AML and advanced myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), now underway at Montefiore Health System.

CONCLUSION: This study showed the frequency and pattern of chromosomal abnormalities of MDS patients in upper northern Thailand were different from other populations. MDS with isolated chromosome 5 abnormalities had clinical characteristics corresponding with patients in good prognosis risk group. However, MDS patients with chromosome 7 and complex abnormalities showed higher percentage blast of BM which high risk to progression to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Relapse remains the leading cause of treatment failure for 30 –50% of patients with high-risk acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) undergoing allogeneic blood or marrow transplantation (BMT). Safety and relapse risk reduction with an ex vivo-expanded, donor-derived, haploidentical (haplo) natural killer (NK)-cell infusion in conjun ction with haploBMT were reported by investigators at MD Anderson Cancer Center in a phase I study (Ciurea, Blood 2017). These data support investigation of CSTD002, haplo NK cells expanded ex vivo using plasma membrane nanoparticles bearing membrane-bound IL-21 and 4-1BBL.
