Thoracoscopic anterior stabilization for thoracolumbar fractures in patients without spinal cord injury: quality of life and long-term results

ConclusionsThoracoscopic anterior stabilization leads to a high percentage of bony fusion in highly unstable thoracic and thoracolumbar fractures with limited post-operative loss of correction and no hardware failure. QOL of these patients does not return to normal population values but is comparable to that of patients with less severe fractures treated with solely posterior instrumentation.Graphical abstract These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

The objective of this study was to first provide the characteristic of SCBF during PVCR with spinal column shortening in severe rigid spinal deformity. Severe rigid scoliokyphosis patients received PVCR above L1 level were included in this prospective study. Patients with simple kyphosis, intraspinal pathology and any degree of neurologic deficits were excluded. ConclusionsMorphological features of the bony structures involving the spinal canal in thoracolumbar burst fractures with severe TSCI are associated with the chronic neurological outcome and could provide more insight than the AIS clinical grading. The fracture pattern may better reflect the actual level of energy transferred to the spinal cord than distinguishing between low- and high-energy trauma.

Conclusions: This pilot study demonstrated that a wheelchair back, which supports the seated spinal curves improves upright posture, functional reach, and wheelchair propulsion skills.
