The deadly false hope of German alternative cancer clinics, part 3: Hallwang Clinic revisited

I've written twice before about German alternative medicine cancer clinics, the quackery they ply, and how they take advantage of desperate cancer patients. Finally, in a disturbing report a journalist has investigated what one of these clinics (Hallwang) does and how such clinics can continue to operate. The post The deadly false hope of German alternative cancer clinics, part 3: Hallwang Clinic revisited appeared first on RESPECTFUL INSOLENCE.

Gummy vitamins are increasingly popular—and not just for kids. By some estimates, adults now comprise up to 80% of the gummy vitamin market. “Pill fatigue” is one factor driving grownups toward gummies. If you have to take multiple supplements every day—and especially if you have problems swallowing capsules or tablets—gummies can make that chore easier (and tastier), finds a 2017 report from the AARP. But do gummy vitamins work the same as ordinary supplements? “It’s a lot harder to make a good gummy than it is to make a tablet or capsule,” says Dr. Tod Cooperman, president ...

This study used particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique to analyze the elements in this plant. The advantage of this technique over other methods is the multi-elemental analysis and high sensitivity. The objective of this study was to determine the elemental compositions and to develop new standard methods for analyzing plant elemental compositions in Thailand. A 2-MeV proton beam was used to identify and characterize major and minor elements namely Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, and Zn in Gymnema Inodorum Lour. Results have shown that these elements are present in varying concentrations in the selected ...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThere has been an increasing interest in using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches to treat cancer. It is therefore relevant and timely to determine if CAM biomarkers can be identified and developed to guide cancer diagnosis and treatment. Herein, we review the status of cancer biomarkers in CAM research and treatment to stimulate further research in this area.Recent FindingsStudies on promising anti-cancer natural products, such as PHY906, honokiol, bryostatin-1, and sulforaphane have demonstrated the existence of potential cancer biomarker(s). Additional studies are required t...

ConclusionThe complete mistletoe extract is more potent to inhibit tumor cell proliferation than isolated ML-1 at an equivalent concentration level. Phenolic compounds found in all Iscucin® preparations might contribute to uphold the cytotoxic activity of ML-1 by antioxidative action. However, further studies are necessary to evaluate the role of VT-A and possible synergistic actions to the antiproliferative effect of aqueous mistletoe extracts.Graphical abstract
