Amantadine-Induced Corneal Edema in a Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Patient: A Case Report

Amantadine hydrochloride is an antiviral agent initially used for treatment and prophylaxis against influenza A. Other indications and off label uses include Parkinsonism, tremors, rigidity, drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms, fatigue in multiple sclerosis, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder [1,2]. Amantadine is also used in patients with brain injury as a neurostimulant and is commonly prescribed for patients receiving rehabilitation. A randomized controlled trial of patients in a vegetative or minimally conscious state found the group receiving amantadine had a more rapid recovery of functionally meaningful behaviors [3].
