The role of electroanatomical mapping in individualized treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation

Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is the cornerstone of a catheter ablation for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) [1]. However, PVI is less efficient for persistent AF (PersAF) than for paroxysmal AF (PAF) [2]. The progression of AF from PAF to PerAF seems to be dependent on atrial remodeling and the formation of a proarrhythmic substrate which is promoted by inadequately treated or unrecognized risk factors such as hypertension, heart failure, obstructive sleep apnea, obesity and metabolic syndrome [3].
