This study adds to our understanding of stigma by assessing how perceived stigma varies from one context to another and how such differences are associated with the location where individuals would prefer an HIV test. Perceived stigma in the university environment was compared to perceived stigma in the home community environment. Multiple logistic regression analysis tested whether a higher level of perceived stigma in one setting was...
Immunodeficiency, whether congenital or acquired, iatrogenic (e.g. allograft recipients) or infectious (e.g. human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)), is associated with an increased risk of malignancy. In the case of HIV infection, most cancers are associated with oncogenic virus infection. Although the overall risk of any cancer is increased 2 –3-fold in people living with HIV, there are three acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining cancers whose relative risk is dramatically higher. Antagonistic pleiotropy is the name given to the phenomenon in which evolutionary processes select for a genetic variant that aids in evolutionary fitness when young, but then causes harm to the individual later in life. Many theorists consider aging as a whole to be antagonistic pleiotropy writ large, but one can pick out individual mechanisms in many species that are compelling candidates to be the result of such a process. In the open access paper noted here, the authors point out one plausibly pleiotropic set of genes in our species. Expansion of gene families with the concomitant acquisition of new functions ...
