Could £400-per-year drug cocktail beat one of deadliest cancers?

Henry Searle was just 19 when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2015. His oncology team only expected him to live for 14 months - but, three years on, he's now completely healthy. This is his story.

Authors: Li J, Zhang L, Xie Q, Wang W, Hua Y, Sun Z Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the efficacies of 125I seed implantation and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in treatment of recurrent lung metastases from colorectal cancer, to compare the tolerance of lung tissue to both forms of radiotherapy, and to analyze the factors that affect the prognosis. Material and methods: According to treatment received, thirty colorectal cancer patients with post-operative lung metastases were separated into two groups: 125I seed implantation group (group A; n = 16) and SBRT group (group B; n = 14). Patients were follo...

This study analyzes clinical consequences and dosimetric variations after imperfect brachytherapy insertions. It examines treatment decisions after such insertions in patients having difficult anatomy, which leads to good subsequent insertions with acceptable dose volume parameters. Material and methods: We reviewed images of all insertions performed during last one year and sorted faulty ones out. Clinical outcome was assessed, analyzing original treatment records. Repeat three-dimensional planning using identical dose-optimization-technique compared their dosimetry. Statistical analysis using SPSS®-Statistics-sof...

This study aimed to evaluate and compare plan reproducibility of intraoperatively built custom linked seeds and loose seeds for prostate brachytherapy. Material and methods: Between December 2010 and March 2014, 76 localized prostate cancer patients received Iodine-125 brachytherapy with external beam radiotherapy. Linked and loose seeds were implanted in 39 and 37 patients, respectively. The primary endpoint was the mean (± standard deviation) of the absolute change in the minimum dose received by 90% of the prostate volume between intraoperative and post-operative planning (ΔD90) to confirm plan reproduc...

Authors: Grisotto S, Cerrotta A, Pappalardi B, Carrara M, Messina A, Tenconi C, Valdagni R, Fallai C Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the prostate contours drawn by two radiation oncologists and one radiologist on magnetic resonance (MR) and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images. TRUS intra- and inter-fraction variability as well as TRUS vs. MR inter-modality and inter-operator variability were studied. Material and methods: Thirty patients affected by localized prostate cancer and treated with interstitial high-dose-rate (HDR) prostate brachytherapy at the National Cancer Institute in ...

PrzybyƂ, Ewa Maj, Joanna Wietrzyk, Maciej KubickiAbstract(−)-Cytisine and its derivatives, characterized by high affinity to neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), have been shown to be important probes in the research of central nervous system disorders. In this work new halogenated N-benzylcytisine derivatives were obtained, and structurally characterized by NMR spectra and X-ray diffraction. Electron impact mass spectral (EIMS) fragmentations have been investigated and detailed fragmentation pathwa...

Solano, Pasquale Porcu, Andrea Ruiu, Yareli Rojas-Aguirre, Ernesto RiveraAbstractDoxorubicin(Dox) is a potent anti-cancer drug used in the treatment of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), however, it causes dose-dependent cardiotoxicity once the treatment is concluded. One of the new strategies to overcome this problem is the design of pH sensitive prodrugs, which can improve its selectivity and reduce the toxic effects of the free drug. For that reason, the synthesis o...

Conclusions: Physical and nutritional prehabilitation in older patients with CRC has not shown a significant reduction in postoperative complications or length of stay. One study that examined the effect of a perioperative nutritional supplement reported a reduction in postoperative complications. Future research should explore targeted combined interventions, taking into account physical and nutritional patient requirements.

Linhardt, Xingqian Ye, Shiguo ChenAbstractLP100R, LP10R and LP5R were isolated from peach gum by ultrafiltration. They were identified as AG II arabinogalactans composed of mannose, rhamnose, glucuronic acid, galactose, xylose and arabinose, which had a β-D-(1→6)-galactan backbone and were branched at O-3 and O-4. LP100R, LP10R and LP5R exist in a spherical conformation with the molecular weight of 8.50 × 104 g/mo...
