The Unraveled Link Between Antiviral Therapy and Heart Failure Hospitalization in Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection - A Nationwide Cohort Study. Circ J. 2018 Mar 02;: Authors: Lin MS, Chung CM, Chang ML, Chen MY, Chang ST, Chu PH, Chen TH, Lin WY, Huang TJ, Lin YS Abstract BACKGROUND: Although hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, whether antiviral therapy (AVT) can reduce heart failure (HF) hospitalizations is unknown. Methods and Results:In this population-based cohort study, we used data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to evaluate the effect of interferon-based therapy (IBT) on cardiovascular events in patients with chronic HCV infection. Clinical outcomes evaluated included HF hospitalizations; a composite of acute myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and peripheral artery disease; all-cause death; and cardiovascular death. Of 83,229 eligible patients with chronic HCV infection, we compared 16,284 patients who received IBT with untreated subjects after propensity score matching. Patients who received IBT were less likely to be hospitalized for HF compared with untreated subjects (incidence density.ID, 0.9 vs. 1.5 events per 103person-years; hazard ratio.HR, 0.58; 95% confidence interval.CI, 0.42-0.79; P=0.001). Compared with untreated subjects, the treated group had significantly lower risk of composite vascular events (ID, 3.7 vs. 5.0 events per 103person-years; P

Authors: Atzema CL, Jackevicius CA, Chong A, Dorian P, Ivers NM, Parkash R, Austin PC Abstract BACKGROUND: Patients with atrial fibrillation frequently seek emergency care. Rates of guideline-concordant oral anticoagulant therapy for stroke prevention are suboptimal in the community. We assessed the association between prescribing of oral anticoagulants in the emergency department (relative to referral to a longitudinal care provider for treatment initiation) and long-term use of oral anticoagulants. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study performed at 15 hospitals in Ontario, Canada, involved patients aged 65...

In this study, we investigated the effect of WDL on lytic human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection. We demonstrate a strong interference with HCMV replication as analyzed in multi-round replication settings. A more detailed analysis of the underlying mechanisms revealed that WDL acts at two distinct steps of the viral replication cycle. During immediate early (IE) times, we observe an inhibition of IE1/IE2 expression. Although WDL was reported to interfere with NF-κB signaling our results suggest the existence of additional mechanisms that impede viral IE expression. During later time points of infection, WDL induced a...

Authors: Emara M, Mohsen E, Shawky RM, El-Domany RA Abstract The relation between non-organ specific autoantibodies (NOSA) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been investigated within different communities resulting in different prevalence rates and patterns. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of some NOSA such as RF-IgG, ANA, ASMA, and LKM-1 in Egyptian patients with HCV group as compared with Egyptian healthy controls group. A total of 186 HCV positive serum samples in addition to 81 samples from healthy control were screened for the presence of some common autoantibodies (RF-IgG, A...

Publication date: March 2020Source: Biomedical Signal Processing and Control, Volume 57Author(s): XiaoJuan Ding, Zhao LvAbstractEye movement information provides an alternative way for patients with muscular and neurological disorders to communicate with other people or devices. Electrooculography (EOG) is an effective eye movement recording method that has been widely applied to design human–computer interaction systems. In this paper, we propose a simplified Chinese eye-writing system based on EOG (EsCew) by identifying the basic strokes of Chinese characters. Specifically, we first use a bandpass digital filter to...

In conclusion, positive statistical association between serum cholesterol (total cholesterol, LDL-c and HDL-c) and chloride levels may suggest their similar modulation by AHF pathophysiology. Serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL-c and chloride contribute to patient survival. PMID: 31819314 [PubMed - in process]

Martin, Sharon Kühlmann-Berenzon, Tom BrittonAbstractTo reach the WHO goal of hepatitis C elimination, it is essential to identify the number of people unaware of their hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and to investigate the effect of interventions on the disease transmission dynamics. In many high-income countries, one of the primary routes of HCV transmission is via contaminated needles shared by people who inject drugs (PWIDs). However, substantial underreporting combined with high uncertainty regarding the size ...

Authors: Păcurar D, Dijmărescu I, Dijmărescu A, Pavelescu M, Andronie M, Becheanu C Abstract Chronic viral hepatitis has been incriminated for inducing autoimmune events, but it is a known fact that interferon-based therapies also promote autoimmunity. We conducted an observational prospective study which included 114 pediatric patients with chronic viral hepatitis B and C. The patients were divided in 2 groups, the first group consisted of treatment-naive patients; the second group included patients who had received interferon-based therapy. We aimed to determine whether the ones who received treatment are more...
