'This is not a cosmetic surgery,' says Manitoba woman fighting for coverage of out-of-country treatment
A Winnipeg woman says her quality of life has drastically improved since going to Germany for water-assisted liposuction to remove painful fat nodules caused by a chronic disease. But the province refuses to pay for the treatment, saying there isn't adequate proof that it's effective.
The objective of this study was to assess erysipelas incidence before and after liposuction treatment for patients suffering from post-mastectomy lymphedema. A prospective cohort study of 130 patients at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö, Sweden with postmastectomy arm lymphedema, who had poor outcomes from prior conservative treatment and clinical signs of subcutaneous adipose tissue hypertrophy, underwent liposuction between 1993-2012. Pre- and postoperative incident data on erysipelas were available for all of them. Mean duration of lymphedema prior to liposuction was 8.8 years (range1-38, standard deviation...
Over the past five years, there was a 23 percent increase in liposuction and a 12 percent increase in tummy tucks among men, and a 30 percent increase in male breast reductions, according to the society.
In 2017, more than 1.3 million American men had operations - mostly getting 'breast' reductions, liposuction and tummy tucks. The rate of male Botox has soared 99% since 2000.

[Ghanaian Times] Two people died at the Obengfo Hospital between 2013 and 2017 after undergoing a liposuction and fat transfer surgery at the facility.
(Wiley) Autologous fat transfer, also known as 'lipofilling,' is a minimally invasive procedure in which the plastic surgeon uses the patient's own fat obtained by liposuction to perform breast reconstruction.
Conclusion: Retained surgical foreign body can clinically manifest as acute reaction, such as an inflammatory response, infection, or abscess within days or weeks after the operation. Patients may complain of pain and discomfort, even months or years after the procedure. Our patient had suffered from delayed inflammation due to retained surgical foreign body after liposuction surgery. We emphasize the need for excellent communication within the surgical team to prevent the incidence of retained surgical bodies.
Conclusions: We found that (a) 'toilet liposuction', (a term the author would like to introduce) (b) multilayer wound closure without tension, (c) avoidance of gliding surfaces d) continuous use of pressure garment for 4 days post-operative and (e) reducing the amount of infiltration are the key factors in avoidance of collections and thus seroma formation. If such a technique is diligently followed, desired results are obtained; yet there is no need to insert drains in most patients. Reducing the need of drains permits early ambulation and better patient comfort without seroma and other complications.
Conclusion: Autologous emulsified nanofat injection is effective in improving the scar characteristics as well as symptoms and helps in scar rejuvenation.
