Arno G. Motulsky (1923 –2018): A Founder of Medical Genetics, Creator of Pharmacogenetics, and Former ASHG President

Arno G. Motulsky, MD, a father of our field, was born in Germany on July 5, 1923, and died in Seattle on January 17, 2018, at 94 years of age. Through his research, writing, and mentoring, he was one of the founders of modern human and medical genetics. He created the field of pharmacogenetics. His life and career were in every way remarkable. His contributions as a scientist, physician, and mentor cannot be overstated. But first, he was a refugee.
