What Can Medtech Do About Gun Control?

Taking a stand on a heated social issue such as gun reform is risky business for CEOs who have shareholders to answer to. But good companies have a purpose that extends beyond the boardroom, according to former Medtronic CEO Bill George, and that includes making sure their employees' children have a safe learning environment. When asked by co-anchor Carl Quintanilla if that needs to include putting space between your company and the National Rifle Association, George didn't miss a beat: "Absolutely it does." "CEOs are not elected to support the NRA," George said. "I think that Congress is afraid of the NRA, so I'm worried about getting something done there, that's why I would like to see more done locally and I think CEOs can do a lot locally, they can have tremendous influence." Another co-anchor of the program, David Faber, asked George if the issue could potentially be framed as a healthcare issue as it relates to keeping people safe.
