CONCLUSIONS: Gaps in memory and various memory types were common after ICU admission, whose prevalence waned over time. Compared with nightmares and fearful memories, gaps in memories were most strongly associated with poor mental health and quality of life. Identifying patients with gaps in memories might be an objective way of planning interventions to improve their long-term outcomes.

We investigated the relationships between individual and occupational demographic variables, professional quality of life (i.e., compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress), and affective distress (i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress) in a sample of 524 prelicensed counselors. Using structural equation analysis, we found statistically significant relationships between the professional quality of life and affective distress latent variables. Implications for supporting the needs of prelicensed counselors in supervision are discussed. Study limitations and suggestions for future research are offered.

This study seeks to identify the shared genes and biological pathways between MDD and insomnia based on their shared genetic variants. First, we performed a meta-analysis based on the GWAS summary statistics of MDD and insomnia obtained from Psychiatric Genomics Consortium and UK Biobank, respectively. Next, we associated shared genetic variants to genes using two gene mapping strategies: (a) positional mapping based on genomic proximity and (b) expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) mapping based on gene expression linkage across multiple tissues. As a result, a total of 719 shared genes were identified. Over half (51%...

Alberto Lucchini In Intensive Care Unit (ICU) survivors, critical illness has an impact on an individual’s long-term health status and quality of life. Adults who have recovered from intensive care management could develop muscle weakness, neurocognitive impairment, difficulties in managing activities of daily living and to returning to work, and psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. A prospective, observational study was designed. Data were collected from January to December 2018 from a structured follow-up program, at 3 time points after ICU discharge: at seven days, a visit in the general war...

et I. Boomsma In recent years, evidence has accumulated with regard to the ubiquity of pleiotropy across the genome, and shared genetic etiology is thought to play a large role in the widespread comorbidity among psychiatric disorders and risk factors. Recent methods investigate pleiotropy by estimating genetic correlation from genome-wide association summary statistics. More comprehensive estimates can be derived from the known relatedness between genetic relatives. Analysis of extended twin pedigree data allows for the estimation of genetic correlation for additive and non-additive genetic effects, as well as a share...

Finding a humorous angle to some of my darkest episodes – and sharing them with strangers – was strangely cathartic“Have you gone mad?” asked one friend. “You’re so brave. I could never do that. Wouldn’t meditation be wiser?” said another. For someone with a long history of depression and anxiety, plus a morbid fear of public speaking, taking up standup comedy might seem like a masochistic decision. Yet to me it makes perfect sense. Excruciating fear of failure is at the heart of most people’s aversion to attempting to make a room full of strangers laugh. But controllin...

I started M1 two months ago and had a good start. However, this past three weeks I have been feeling like I am slipping into a bout of depression/anxiety. I am having trouble focusing during lectures/self-study, and after having 8 hours of classes every day I have been feeling too exhausted at night to do any meaningful studying. I have trouble falling asleep so I get more exhausted day by day. I have stopped exercising. I don't have the social energy to talk with any classmates. I feel so... Read more

CONCLUSIONS: The high point, one-year, and lifetime prevalence of LBP in Brazil indicates that there is a need for coordinated efforts from government, the private sector, universities, health workers, and civil society to deliver appropriate management of LBP in middle-income countries.PMID:34561187 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjpt.2021.07.004

Brain Behav Immun. 2021 Sep 22:S0889-1591(21)00557-2. doi: 10.1016/j.bbi.2021.09.013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDepression is an increasingly common but extremely serve mood disorder that remains poorly understood and inadequately treated. Fast-spiking parvalbumin-positive interneurons (PVIs), a subpopulation of GABAergic interneurons (GABA, g-aminobutyric acid), exhibit a widespread distribution throughout the hippocampus, and has been reported to play an important role in a variety of mental disorders. However, the relationship between depression and hippocampal PVIs remains unclear. Here in this present study, a ser...
