Development and Evaluation of a Clinical Practice Guideline to Improve Antibiotic Stewardship in a Post-Acute/Long-Term Care Setting

Antibiotic stewardship efforts are mandated in post-acute and long-term care (PA-LTC) settings secondary to high rates of inappropriate antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance. Urinary tract infections (UTI), respiratory tract infections (RTI), and skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) are among common reasons for inappropriate antibiotic use, with as high as 75% of prescriptions deemed unnecessary. As such, a PA-LTC organization in Maryland has identified the inappropriate use of antibiotics as a problem among its facilities and is seeking to implement best practices.
