Defining the Range of Standard Practice for Field Placement and Target Volume Definition for Bone Metastases at the Ottawa Hospital; Groundwork for Evaluating Skill Competency in a Clinical Specialist Radiation Therapist

A clinical specialist radiation therapist (CSRT) position in palliative radiation therapy (RT) was created at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) in September 2014. One of our goals was to expand the CSRT's skill set to include competency in placing fields and creating target volumes for bone metastases requiring conventional palliative RT. In order to evaluate competency, we first required an institutional benchmark for these skills. Herein we describe a survey study that aimed to define the range of standard practice patterns at TOH for field placement and target volume definition for bone metastases requiring conventional palliative RT.
