Treatment decisions in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients with severe heart failure (HF) and short clinical history are challenging because of the difficulty of determining HF stage or prognosis in the acute HF phase. We hypothesized that persistent decreased systemic or increased pulmonary arterial pressure, including in the subclinical phase, may affect the main pulmonary artery diameter (PAD), ascending aortic diameter (AoD), and their ratio (PAD/AoD). The aims of this study were to assess AoD, PAD, and PAD/AoD by non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scans in DCM patients in the acute phase of HF and to examine the ...

CONCLUSIONS: The median transplant-free survival in patients with LAM is greater than 20 years. Menopausal status as well as structural and physiological markers of disease severity significantly affect the rate of decline of FEV1 and progression to death or lung transplantation in LAM. We present the case of a 65-year-old male with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis who developed refractory status epilepticus secondary to hyperammonemia following lung transplant. The patient presented on postoperative day 7 with super-refractory status epilepticus and normal computed tomography scan of the head. Hyperammonemia was suspected due to refractory seizures and confirmed with peak ammonia level >1000 μmol/L. Despite aggressive treatment, the patient developed global cerebral edema and died. Postmortem investigations revealed that the patient was positive for Ureaplasma parvum. Additional studies are needed ...

We assessed the lung inflammation, inflation status and inhomogeneities after lung transplantation. Our purpose was to investigate the possible differences between patients who did or did not develop PGD. METHODS: We designed a prospective observ...

Abstract Mutations of the surfactant protein (SP)-C gene (SFTPC) have been associated with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and childhood interstitial lung disease (ILD). If accurate diagnosis and proper management are delayed, irreversible respiratory failure demanding lung transplantation may ensue. A girl was born at term but was intubated and given exogenous surfactant due to RDS. Cough and tachypnea persisted, and symptoms rapidly progressed at 16 months of age despite treatment with antibiotics, oral prednisolone, methylprednisolone pulse therapy, and intravenous immunoglobulin. At 20 months, she...

In this study, we proposed an imaging related parameter, that is, the ratio of injured lung volume fraction, for the prognosis evaluation of acute PQ poisoning based on the correlation between disease progress and lung imaging features. An artificial neural network was trained and then used to classify the injured and normal lung regions. The ratio of injured lung volume fraction was calculated from the injured lung volume fractions in the first and second CT scans after three-dimensional reconstruction. Parameters of blood tests were collected. A significant difference was observed with respect to the ratio of injured lun...
