Zimmer Biomet, Plaintiffs look to settle roughly 300 NexGen knee cases

Zimmer Biomet (NYSE:ZBH) has reportedly reached a settlement with plaintiffs in a case over allegedly defective NexGen knee implants, according to court documents filed this week. The Warsaw, Ind.-based company and individuals involved in the multidistrict litigation told US District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer this week that they’ve “reached a confidential settlement in principle that will potentially resolve the entirety of cases,” according to the documents. The settlement could cover approximately 300 cases involved in the litigation as well as a number of cases in state courts that were pending, according to the court documents. Proceedings in the litigation and any individual cases consolidated within it were stayed by the Judge, “pending the outcome and administration of the parties’ confidential settlement in principle.” Last week, Zimmer Biomet lost two bids looking to dismiss claims in cases over alleged faults in metal-on-metal hips including an increased risk of metallosis, according to court documents.
