Cognitive behavioral therapy protocol development for childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus
Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect a variety of organ systems. With treatment, cSLE can be well managed but a subgroup of youth with cSLE (~30%) experience debilitating symptoms including pain, fatigue, and sleep dysregulation, despite well controlled disease. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be effective in managing pain, sleep difficulties, and fatigue in a variety of medical conditions. However, a tailored approach to meet the needs of a cSLE population has not yet been developed.
