Pain outcomes after celiac plexus block in children and young adults with cancer

The use of celiac plexus block (CPB) for malignant or non-malignant abdominal pain has been reported mostly in adult studies. The pediatric experience is limited to 3 single case reports and a series of 3 cases. We evaluated the pain outcomes after CPB in 4 children and young adults with cancer. The methodology applied to discern the effectiveness of the CPB included analysis of mean daily pain scores (PS, 0 –10) and morphine consumption (iv morphine equivalent daily, MED, mg/kg/day) before and after the CPB, until either complete resolution of pain (in one case) or until the time of death (in 3 cases, with survival after CPB of 6, 16, and 37 days, respectively).
