In addition, the correlations between cludin-1 and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), epithelial-mes...

This study investigated the possibility of using umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as cellular carriers of IFN-β.Isolated umbilical cord MSCs were transfected with a lentivirus packaging IFN-β-overexpression plasmid. A549 cells were subcutaneously injected into nude mice to establish a non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) mouse model. A total of 50 mice were randomly assigned to 5 different groups: a control group, IFN-β group, IFN-β-MSCs group, MSCs-lentivirus group, and MSCs group. Next, the IFN-β-MSCs, MSCs-lentivirus, and MSCs were injected into the A549 lung cancer-bearing mice in the...

In this study, we compared the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features between 36 APAMs and 48 endometrial carcinomas. APAM with a highly complex structure (n = 13) coexisted with atypical hyperplasia (n = 5) and endometrial carcinoma (n = 1). Two patients had endometrial carcinomas at 1 and 102 months. Four patients recurred at 1-57 months but none died of disease. The fibromuscular stroma demonstrated 3 uncharacterized features: a broad bundle (10/36), a lobular structure separated by the stromal branches (26/36), and the extension of fibromuscular stroma underneath ...

Publication date: Available online 14 January 2019Source: Pathology - Research and PracticeAuthor(s): Cong-Cong Wu, Zhi-Jun SunAbstractExpression of the family with sequence similarity 3 member C (FAM3C) is necessary for the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). However, the expression level and clinicopathological significance of FAM3C in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has not been thoroughly elucidated to date. We performed immunohistochemical staining on human OSCC specimens with FAM3C, co-inhibitory immune checkpoints, EMT markers, and cancer stem cells (CSCs) markers to analyze the expression levels and clinic...

Publication date: Available online 14 January 2019Source: Pathology - Research and PracticeAuthor(s): Xin Gong, Xiaoyun Liao, Mengyi HuangAbstractIncreasing evidence reveal the important role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the initiation and progression of glioma. However, the role of lncRNA cancer susceptibility candidate 7 (CASC7) in glioma is largely unknown. At first, the expression level of CASC7 was tested in glioma tissues and cell lines by using qRT-PCR. We applied Kaplan-Meier method to analyze the correlation between the expression level between CASC7 expression and the overall survival rate of glioma patie...

We aimed to investigate the expression of LincRNA-p21 in different types of liver diseases.MethodsSerum from patients with primary liver diseases (chronic HBV or HCV infection, hepatitis B virus-related cirrhosis, hepatitis B virus-related HCC, non-HBV/HCV-related HCC, alcoholic liver disease) and HBV negative liver metastatic cancer and control healthy individuals ...

Publication date: Available online 14 January 2019Source: Pathology - Research and PracticeAuthor(s): Aili Tan, Ruoyu Luo, Peng RuanAbstractEndometrial cancer (EC) is a huge threat to women’s health. The aims of this study were to investigate the role of microRNA (miR)-495 in the proliferation and apoptosis of EC cells in vitro. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was performed to detect the mRNA levels. In addition, dual-luciferase reporter assay was used to verified that PIK3R1 was a target of miR-495. After transfection with miR-495 mimics, Cell Counting Kit 8 (CCK-8) assay was p...

This article focuses specifically on Hamperl's description of the Third Reich. The overriding aim of the paper is to elaborate on his political role and his relationship to National Socialism, which has hardly been investigated to date. Hamperl's autobiographical statements on this very question are therefore compared with the historical facts and – where necessary – contrasted and corrected. The same applies to the image that Hamperl draws of those pathologists who were part of his professional and personal network. The study is partly based on previously unevaluated archive sources and on a reanalysis of the r...
