Conclusions: OCT-A is a noninvasive, reliable method with which to quantify the vessel changes in radiation maculopathy and, given the association between vascularization and malignancy, this procedure may be an aid in treatment decision-making and in monitoring the efficacy of treatment.Ophthalmic Res

A morbidly-obese 57-year-old diabetic and hypertensive man with chronic kidney disease, diastolic heart failure, and bilateral hearing loss was found to have soft tissue masses/densities in the lateral aspect of both auditory canals on local examination and on imaging. He underwent biopsies of both ear canal masses and histologic examination revealed amyloid deposits in the dermis. These deposits were confirmed as AL (amyloid light chain) kappa-type amyloid by laser mass spectrometry. A systemic work-up showed plasma cell dyscrasia with 9% kappa light chain restricted plasma cells in the bone marrow as well as amyloid depo...

Publication date: Available online 15 August 2018Source: Colloids and Surfaces B: BiointerfacesAuthor(s): Jintao Xue, Yongli Shi, Chunyan Li, Xiaojie Xu, Shuxin Xu, Mingxiang CaoAbstractThe purpose of this study was to fabricate a novel binary hydrogel, and the insulin-loaded hydrogel was used as rectal suppository to prevent type I diabetes. The binary hydrogel was synthesized via solution polymerization. Its structure was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectra. The swelling behaviors of binary hydrogels were revealed in pH 1.2, 6.8 and 7.4 buffers, respectively. Their inner morphologi...

Conclusion: We identified a synonymous variant affecting the second nucleotide of exon 3 in theAVP gene (c.324G#x3e;A) in a family in which adFNDI segregates. Notably, we showed that this variant causes partial missplicing of pre-mRNA, resulting in accumulation of the variant prohormone in ER. Our study suggests that even a small amount of aberrant mRNA might be sufficient to disturb cellular function, resulting in adFNDI.

Abstract Non-healing wound is a serious complication of diabetes, associated with extremely slow wound closure, and a high rate of infection, resulting in amputation or losses of limbs, high health care cost and poor quality of patient's life. In the present study, we hypothesized that nanofiber mats composed of a combination of chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Zinc oxide (ZnO) could be an effective option for faster healing of diabetic wounds due to the wound healing activities of chitosan-PVA nanofibers and antibacterial properties of ZnO. Nanofiber mats of chitosan, PVA and ZnO were synthesized using elect...

Abstract AIM: To evaluate racial differences, and ocular and systemic determinants of macular thickness (MT), measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in a normal multiethnic Asian population. METHOD: MT was measured from a 6×6 mm2 central macular area using the Cirrus high-definition OCT (HD-OCT) (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA). The associations between ocular and systemic factors with MT were evaluated using linear regression analyses with generalised estimating equation models to account for intereye correlation. RESULTS: 7447 healthy eyes (2577 Chinese, 2072 Mal...

By CHADI NABHAN MD MBA Life is busy, yet we somehow find time to stay engaged on social media, remain engrossed in the 24/7 news cycle, and continue our futile efforts to resist clickbait. While social media can allow us to mindlessly scroll through feeds, it also provides an avenue to provoke vigorous dialogue, however diverse, controversial, or even rooted in unfettered biases. These exchanges have served as the primordial soup for virtual friend or foe-ships. Tense and argumentative Twitter exchanges are especially entertaining given the challenges in justifying a position in fewer than 280 characters. Thus, tweetorial...

Authors: Yamamoto R, Robert Shima K, Igawa H, Kaikoi Y, Sasagawa Y, Hayashi Y, Inoshita N, Fukuoka H, Takahashi Y, Takamura T Abstract A 43-year-old woman with an 8-year history of diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia presented with amenorrhea and convulsion. Her MRI scan revealed a 3.5-cm T2-hyperintense pituitary macroadenoma with suprasellar extension to the frontal lobe and bilateral cavernous sinus invasion. Her serum levels of GH and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) were elevated to 9.08 ng/mL (normal range:

Follow the Wheat Belly lifestyle and literally hundreds of diseases can be reversed: type 2 diabetes reverts to normal within weeks to months (depending on how much weight needs to be lost to restore insulin sensitivity), fatty liver reverses to normal within a few weeks, skin rashes recede, IBS and acid reflux are gone within days in the majority, high triglycerides plummet, even several forms of kidney disease can reverse. But there are health conditions that, once established, can leave effects that can be irreversible even if the initial causative condition reverses. For example, type 2 diabetes can cause kidney d...
