Lyme Carditis and High-Degree Atrioventricular Block

We report 5 recent cases presented over a 2-year period. The variation of non-specific presentations requires a high index of suspicion for prompt diagnosis and correct management. Recognising this early would curtail the progression of conduction disorders and potentially avoid permanent pacemaker implantation.

(NEW YORK) — WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne was shocked and hurt when her request to be medically excused for the season was denied by an independent medical panel. Having battled Lyme disease for more than a decade and now taking 64 pills a day, she thought she was definitely going to be considered high-risk to get severe illness if she contracted the coronavirus. The panel of independent doctors the league and union agreed upon to make that decision thought otherwise, ruling Monday that she was not “high risk, and should be permitted to play in the bubble.” The disease is not included on the Centers for Di...

This study was undertaken with the aim of a comparative and quantitative analysis of the epidemiological aspects of LD infections in Korea and Japan from 2011 to 2016. The raw data analyzed in this study were obtained from the websites of the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), Korea, and the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), Japan. In total 65 cases of LD were observed with a cumulative incidence rate (CIR) of 0.22 per million population in Korea from 2011 to 2016. During the same period in Japan, there were 75 cases of LD with a CIR of 0.10 [significantly higher than that in Korea (p

Schotthoefer Jonathan D. Oliver Jesse D. Berman Lyme disease is a well-recognized public health problem in the USA, however, other tick-borne diseases also have major public health impacts. Yet, limited research has evaluated changes in the spatial and temporal patterns of non-Lyme tick-borne diseases within endemic regions. Using laboratory dat...

Harms and colleagues advised a single dose of doxycycline to prevent Lyme disease from a Ixodes ricinus tick bite.1 Using a modified-intention-to-treat analysis, the authors that reported a single 200 mg dose of doxycycline resulted in a 67% relative risk reduction for the subjects in the treatment arm.

We report the results of gene expression profiling via RNA-sequencing of primary human choroid plexus epithelial cells in vitro that were infected with Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. Epithelial cells were cultured with B. burgdorferi for 48 hours prior to RNA isolation. Following high-throughput sequencing via Illumina HiSeq 4000, a total of 258 differentially expressed genes were identified. Subsequent data analysis indicates an inflammatory and immune response generated by the epithelial cells following infection, marked by chemotactic cytokines and interferon stimulated genes. Several genes a...

We examined the effect of a positive serostatus at baseline for selected pathogens associated with chronic infections (Helicobacter pylori,Borrelia burgdorferi sensulato,Toxoplasma gondii, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, herpes simplex virus 1/2, and human herpesvirus 6) on all-cause mortality with multivariable parametric survival models. We found a reduced survival time in individuals with a positive serostatus forHelicobacter pylori (accelerated failure time (AFT) − 15.92, 95% CI − 29.96; − 1.88), cytomegalovirus (AFT − 22.81, 95% CI − 36.41; −&...
