Cataract in a patient with 47,XYY sex chromosome aneuploidy.

DISCUSSION: Patients with sex chromosome aneuploidy 47,XYY have higher risk of congenital malformations, although ophthalmological anomalies are unusual. Evaluation of patients with tall stature and behavioural problems should include a chromosomal analysis in order to determine the aetiology. PMID: 29397244 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

This study describes the first use of PGD for GJB2 associated non-syndromic deafness in Iran. GJB2 donor splicing site IVS1+1G>A mutation analysis was performed using Sanger sequencing for a total of 71 Iranian families with at least 1 deaf child diagnosed with non-syndromic deafness. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) was performed, followed by PGD for a cousin couple with a 50% chance of having an affected child. Bi-allelic pathogenic mutations were found in a total of 12 families (~17 %); of which a couple was a PGD volunteer. The deaf woman in this family was homozygous and her husband was a carrier of the IVS1+1G>A ge...

Abstract The discovery of "oestrus-producing" hormones was a major research breakthrough in biochemistry and pharmacology during the early part of the 20th century. The elucidation of the molecular weight and chemical structure of major oxidative metabolites of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) led to the award of the Nobel Prize in 1939 to Adolf Frederick Johann Butenandt and Leopold Ruzicka. Considered a bulk androgen in the circulation, DHEA and its sulfated metabolite DHEA-S can be taken up by most tissues where the sterols are metabolized to active androgenic and estrogenic compounds needed for growth a...

AbstractPurpose of reviewThis manuscript addresses the risks for venous thromboembolism (VTE) during pregnancy and the associated challenges of both diagnosis and treatment.Recent findingsThe obstacles to diagnosis given lack of specificity of typical biomarkers to predict VTE in pregnancy, as well as the unique fetal and bleeding risks introduced by managing massive pulmonary embolism (PE) with thrombolytics or thrombectomy are highlighted.SummaryVTE during pregnancy and the postpartum window occurs at a 6 –10-fold higher rate compared with age-matched peers and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Hypercoag...

AbstractHome visitation research remains on the forefront as policy makers look to evidence for programs they believe are worthy of investment, particularly in terms of child abuse prevention. A randomized controlled trial (N = 245) of the Healthy Families Arizona home visitation program was conducted. Outcomes were assessed across several key domains related to child abuse and neglect: safety and resources, parenting attitudes and behaviors, health and maternal outcomes, and mental health and coping. Findings revea led significant differences between the groups at both 6-month and 1-year follow-up assessment...

AbstractMonitoring of changes in acute phase proteins following the treatment of endometritis can help us to improve treatment protocols. In total, 81 dairy cows affected by clinical endometritis were selected in 30  days in milk (DIM) and treated with hyperimmune serum. Cervical mucus cytology was used to determine the neutrophil percentage. Levels of amyloid A (SAA) and haptoglobin (Hp) in blood serum were measured just before and 2 weeks after the treatment. The cows were timed-inseminated with Heat Synch following the treatment, and pregnancy was diagnosed 35 ± 3 days after AI. Varia...
