Seizure reductions outlast DBS explantation

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT) is a reversible and safe treatment option for drug resistant focal epilepsy. It reduces the frequency and intensity of generalized or complex focal seizures with a responder rate of 68% after five years [1,2]. Its effect is thought to be based on stimulating the circuit of Papez – a dense neuronal network connecting the mesial temporal lobe to the mammillary bodies, the ANT, the cingulum and the parahippocampal region.
