Dietary assessment and counseling for dental erosion.

CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should screen patients exhibiting dental erosion for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, rumination syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Clinicians should screen patients without a medical explanation for their erosion for exposure to acidic foods and beverages, particularly for habits that prolong exposure. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Identification of intrinsic and extrinsic acid exposures and recommendations to minimize exposures are important to prevent erosion and maintain oral health. CONCLUSIONS Our results highlight that interaction of Nr4a1 and LKB1 can mitigate T2DM by activating the AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway and inhibiting NF-kappaB activation. This may offer new insight for T2DM treatment. PMID: 31939452 [PubMed - in process]

This study reported a simple and inexpensive method for determination of 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) and free amino acids in different royal jelly based dietary supplement samples using a purpose-made dual-channeled capillary electrophoresis (CE) system with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4D). The objective of the work is to propose a tool for food / quality control activities that can be realizable even with a modest infrastructure. 10-HDA and free amino acids were analyzed using the background electrolyte (BGE) solutions composed of 20 mM Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane adjusted ...

Publication date: Available online 15 January 2020Source: Plant ScienceAuthor(s): Courtney P. LeisnerAbstractAnthropogenic increases in fossil fuel emissions have been a primary driver of increased concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide ([CO2]) and other greenhouse gases resulting in warmer temperatures, alterations in precipitation patterns, and increased occurrence of extreme weather events in terrestrial areas across the globe. In agricultural growing regions, alterations in climate can challenge plant productivity in ways that impact the ability of the world to sustain adequate food production for a growing and i...

The World Health Organization in 2016 estimated that over 20% of the global disease burden and deaths were attributed to modifiable environmental factors. However, data clearly characterizing the impact of environmental exposures and health endpoints in African populations is limited. To describe recent progress and identify important research gaps, we reviewed literature on environmental health research in African populations over the last decade, as well as research incorporating both genomic and environmental factors. We queried PubMed for peer-reviewed research articles, reviews, or books examining environmental exposu...

AbstractPurpose of reviewHigh resolution esophageal manometry (HRM) has expanded understanding of esophageal motor function. The Chicago Classification scheme has allowed systematic categorization of the myriad of manometric parameters identified during HRM. Multichannel intraluminal impedance pH has enhanced ambulatory reflux monitoring through complete assessment of esophageal content transit. However, the clinical implications of identified minor esophageal functional disorders remain unclear.Recent findingsEsophagogastric junction outlet obstruction is defined by esophagogastric junction obstruction with preserved peri...

AbstractA systematic review was conducted to provide an overview of the efficacy and safety of125I irradiation stent placement for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and main portal vein tumor thrombosis (MPVTT). Six studies with 406 patients were included in the final analysis. The median overall survival for patients treated with125I irradiation stent placement was 10.3  months. The most common radiation-related adverse event was leukopenia. The stent-related adverse events consisted of fever, abdominal pain, hemorrhage, and anorexia. No stent or seed migration was reported. Overall, the use of an125I irra...

Abstract Tooth Erosions Associated with Gastroesophageal Reflux: Cause, Prevention and Restorative Therapy Abstract. Dental erosions are caused by the recurring contact of solutions which are unsaturated in tooth minerals, ith hard tooth substances. This initially leads to softening and later to an irreversible loss of hard tooth substance. Erosion is observed particularly with excessive consumption of acidic foods (e.g. soft drinks or citrus fruits) but also in connection with gastrointestinal (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or psychosomatic diseases (anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa). The aim of this article...

Dental erosion can occur after exposure to acids either in the diet or as a result of physical conditions. Extrinsic dietary acids come from foods or beverages that are consumed. Exposures to these acids can be increased by specific behaviors such as holding liquids in the mouth or swishing with them. In contrast, teeth are exposed to intrinsic acids when the patient has disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, rumination syndrome, or gastroesophageal reflux. The science supporting the role of dietary risk factors for erosion and the actions clinicians can take to protect patients at risk for erosion were explored.

The dentist may not be your favorite appointment, but it’s a necessity.  Good oral hygiene saves you from more than just tooth decay, cavities and bad breath. It is critically important because it can help prevent certain medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. And here’s something else: The state of your teeth, mouth and gums can clue your dentist into other medical issues you may need to address. By examining your mouth, your dentist can identify eating disorders, sleeping problems, anxiety, stress and more. Below are some of the things dentists can see about yo...
