Hepatobiliary MRI as novel selection criteria in liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma
Liver transplantation (LT) is regarded as the best option for radical treatment in patients with very early (stage 0) or early (stage A) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), according to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer guideline.[1 –3] Careful patient selection is important in reducing the tumor recurrence rate and maximizing the effectiveness of LT for HCC because the availability of deceased and living donor organs is limited. Thus, the Milan criteria are used as the gold standard to increase the post-transplant survival r ate of patients with HCC, with a 5-year survival rate of 70% after LT and a recurrence rate of less than 20%.
