2017: The Year of Psychopathology

Many Americans and other citizens of the world found 2017 an annus horribilis they will feel relieved to put behind them. Following shock and depression in the aftermath of the November 2016 presidential election, many Americans experienced 2017 as a psychopathological year, full of chaos, anxiety, and the erosion of stable institutions and supports. Patients in our offices and the populace at large seemed to suffer from higher levels of anxiety and agitation, common and understandable responses to uncertainty and threat; as well as a newly “traumatized” fear of disaster around the next corner in the next news cycle or Twitter feed.
