Long-term follow-up results of umbilical hernia repair.

Conclusions: The overall umbilical hernia recurrence rate was 13.1%. Body mass index> 30 kg/m2, diabetes and wound infection were independent risk factors for UH recurrence. According to our study results, laparoscopic medium and large umbilical hernia repair has slight advantages over open mesh repair concerning early postoperative complications, long-term postoperative pain and recurrence. BrandowAbstractPain is the most frequently occurring complication of sickle cell disease (SCD) and the leading cause of hospitalizations for affected individuals. Acute pain episodes are also an independent predictor of mortality in individuals with SCD. The pathophysiology of pain in SCD is complex and has been attributed to several biologic factors, including oxidative stress, vaso-occlusion, ischemia-reperfusion injury and inflammation. In spite of this complex biology, painful events requiring hospitalization ...

I don't remember what it feels like to live without pain. At 15, I began feeling aching, stabbing, and burning sensations in my lower back and down my legs. Swallowing a few Aleve didn't help —in fact, nothing did. If I sit or stand for any period of time, or lift something heavy or fall, I pay for it, sometimes for weeks or months. I've slept on the kitchen linoleum, because the carpet felt too soft to stand. For 17 years, I went to doctor after doctor, undergoing scans, physical therapy, and just about every"alternative" treatment that promised relief. Despite some amazing doctors and the expen...

They increase in diseases such as diabetes and sepsis. Herein we propose a serum albumin-fatty acid saturation test. •We based our test on three methodologies: isoelectric focusing (IF) of human plasma albumin, staining proteins after i...

Same-eye comparison of pupillary dilation with an intraoperative standardized intracameral combination of mydriatics (Mydrane®) versus a preoperative ophthalmic (Mydriasert®) in standard cataract surgery in non-diabetic patients. J Fr Ophtalmol. 2019 Aug 19;: Authors: de Faria A, Giorgi R, Cohen Salmon M, Bonnel S, Holweck G, Le Corre A, Chazalon E Abstract INTRODUCTION: Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the world, and its success depends in part on the quality of mydriasis. PURPOSE: To compare, for the same eye, the pupillary dilation obtained with Mydrane® (st...

CONCLUSION: High Galectin-3, MMP-9, and ST-2 are independently influenced to a certain degree by demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics. However, no single characteristic was found to be commonly associated with all of the three biomarkers. PMID: 31438834 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

If damage is limited, cells can repair lysosomes by means of the endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) machinery. Presumably if repair fails, lysosomes are tagged with ubiquitin to initiate clearance by selective macroautophagy, termed lysophagy. Accumulating evidence suggests dama...

Publication date: Available online 23 August 2019Source: Redox BiologyAuthor(s): Zheng Lu, James A. ImlayAbstractOrganisms have evolved two different classes of the ubiquitous enzyme fumarase: the [4Fe–4S] cluster-containing class I enzymes are oxidant-sensitive, whereas the class II enzymes are iron-free and therefore oxidant-resistant. When hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) attacks the most-studied [4Fe–4S] fumarases, only the cluster is damaged, and thus the cell can rapidly repair the enzyme. However, this study shows that when elevated levels of H2O2 oxidized the class I fumarase of the obligate anaerobe Bacteroide...

Abstract Every age group experiences back pain, a common reason for activity limitation. Management of back pain in a woman is challenging because of physiologic and hormonal changes through the woman's life cycle. The treatment is dictated by etiology and a woman's stage of life or reproductive events, such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause. Most episodes of low back pain are temporary with minimal long-term sequelae, but recurrent and long-lasting episodes require more thorough clinical evaluation. This monograph describes the anatomy of the spine; illustrates a focused, thorough evaluation, including o...
