Suicidal Ideation among Midwestern Adolescents: Substance Abuse and Hopelessness

Purpose: Indiana currently has the second highest rate of teen suicides in the entire U.S. with an average of 14.4 suicides per 100,000 teens. According to reports published by the CDC, Illinois has the 5th lowest teen suicide rate with an average of 10.6 suicides per 100,000 teens. Despite these two states being very having similar geography, climate, and demographics, a pronounced difference in the teen suicide rate exists. The goal of this study is to explain the underlying factors of the difference in suicide rates between these two neighboring states.
