Natural Course of Adolescent Depression Treatment in the Primary Care Setting

Purpose: Roughly 11% of US adolescents experience a major depressive episode, and the majority of adolescents suffering from depression do not obtain the appropriate treatment. Primary care is an ideal location for the diagnosis of depression, however, little is known regarding treatment and follow-up of depression in this setting. Previous research has followed the course of treatment for adolescents diagnosed with depression over a three month time period, but depression is a chronic condition with a high possibility of recurrence later in life.
