Venous Thromboembolism After Surgical Treatment of Breast Cancer

Conclusions Nearly two thirds of all 90-day VTE events after breast cancer surgery occur after discharge. Further research should determine whether a longer course of VTE prophylaxis is warranted among specific populations including those with prolonged hospitalizations, previous VTE, and those undergoing autologous reconstruction.

Authors: Xu W, Lou Y, Chen W, Kang Y Abstract Effective cancer therapy usually requires the assistance of well-designed drug carriers. In order to increase the drug accumulation to tumor tissue as well as to reduce the side effects of drug carriers, the hybrid drug delivery system (DDS) was developed by integrating folic acid (FA) and a metal-organic framework (MOF). The anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was preloaded into the MOF nanoparticles during the synthesis process of the MOF nanoparticles. After surface modification with FA, the resulting FA/MOF/DOX nanoparticles were capable of serving as a biocompatible ...

Ringuette, Theodore J. BrownAbstractStudies indicate androgens contribute to initiation or progression of epithelial ovarian cancer through poorly understood mechanisms. We provide evidence that the androgen receptor (AR) interacts in a ligand-independent manner with the putative armadillo repeat domain of ventricular zone expressed PH domain-containing 1 (VEPH1). This interaction was increased by mutation of the two nuclear receptor...

This article reviews the major pathways by which adrenal steroids are converted to the potent male sex hormones, testosterone (T) and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (5α-DHT) and the discrete enzyme isoforms involved in castration resistant prostate cancer. Previous studies have mainly utilized radiotracers to investigate these pathways but have not used prevailing concentrations of precursors found in castrate male human serum. In addition, the full power of stable-isotope dilution liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry has not been applied routinely. Furthermore, it is clear that adaptive responses occur in th...

Several epidemiological and in vitro studies have shown controversial data about progesterone effects in ovarian cancer. Progesterone can be converted in its active metabolite, allopregnanolone, its effects in ovarian cancer are still unknown. Previously, we demonstrated that allopregnanolone modifies ovarian morphophysiology, being able to alter critical process of tumor d...

This article demonstrates the fabrication of versatile nanoformulation by conveniently wrapping the ultrasmall platinum nanoparticles-dispersed over the zinc metal-doped mesoporous silica-based nanocarriers (Zn-MSNs) for not only conveying the drug cargo efficiently but also facilitating the advanced abilities of deep tumor penetration through interacting with adherens junctions and aphotic (dark) synergistic therapeutic effects to combat cancer multidrug resistance.
