Lord of the Ring: General Metz and Local Anesthesia

Years after trademarking procaine as “Novocain,” U.S.-born German-American Herman A. Metz discovered that this action had unintentionally complicated the American military’s procurement of World War I local anesthetics. A colonel and eventually a general in the National Guard, Metz trademarked a hexagonal ring logo bearing letter s from his company, HA METZ LAB. Metz, his wife, and founding father Alexander Hamilton were memorialized by the naming of Hamilton-Metz Field in Brooklyn, New York.
