anesthesiologist handoffs and morbidity

Conclusions and Relevance Among adults undergoing major surgery, complete handover of intraoperative anesthesia care compared with no handover was associated with a higher risk of adverse postoperative outcomes. These findings may support limiting complete anesthesia handovers." Handovers During Anesthesia Care... anesthesiologist handoffs and morbidity

ConclusionsImpaired neurodevelopment was associated with increase of GFAP plasma levels during cardiac surgery in infants. The identification of the neurologic high-risk phases of CPB run could support the application of new neuroprotective strategies for CHD repair.

We report a case of a healthy five-year old boy with a posttraumatic fulminant localized necrotisizing facial soft tissue infection.A five-year old healthy boy was admitted after a sledging accident. He presented with a laceration of the right cheek. Within 12 h after rinsing and primarily closure under analgosedation he developed localized severe pain and fever. Immediate wound revision under general anesthesia revealed necrotic subcutaneous tissue with an abscess cavity. After surgical debridement the wound was initially left open. An empiric antibiotic therapy with amoxicillin/clavulanate was initiated. A facial bone ...

Accurate measurement of arterial blood pressure is an essential component of patient care management. Patients undergoing surgical and interventional procedures often require direct measurement of blood pressure via an arterial catheter. The indications and necessity for placement of an arterial line are based on the type of operation or interventional procedure, patient condition, comorbidities, anticipated treatment regimen, and/or frequency of blood draws. Placement of an arterial line can contribute to pain and discomfort during insertion.

CONCLUSIONS: the majority of our clinical and laboratories findings were discrepant with the medical literature. These differences may be secondary to regional characteristics or by the fact that our population included only those patients who underwent spinal surgery.RESUMO INTRODU ÇÃO: A espondilite anquilosante (EA) é uma espondiloartropatia soronegativa, caracterizada principalmente pelo envolvimento do esqueleto axial e das articulações sacroilíacas. A EA promove alterações biomecânicas que predispõem a coluna a fraturas, deformidades e à espo...

AbstractSpecialist antenatal clinics are increasingly being used to enable anaesthetists to evaluate pregnant women with co-morbidities and those at high risk of obstetric complications. In this journal a team from Israel describe the process of setting up and running such a clinic over a 14 year period. One of the challenges they identify was the limited referral of high risk women. Based on UK and US literature, the use of structured referral tools, clear criteria for referral and regular antenatal multidisciplinary meetings may help to address this.

AbstractPrecise identification of the femoral nerve (FN) is essential for an ultrasound-guided femoral nerve block. We hypothesized that the distance between the FN and the femoral artery (FA) is correlated with patient age. In this prospective observational study, we evaluated the FN –FA (from the lateral edge of the FA to the medial edge of the FN) distance [0.42 ± 0.42 (mean ± standard deviation) cm] in 102 patients using ultrasound. In addition, we calculated the cross-sectional area of the iliopsoas muscle using computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Multiple...
