Cerner passes the torch to a new CEO

Cerner Corp. announced Wednesday that Brent Shafer will be its new CEO and chairman. Shafer, who will assume the new duties on Feb. 1, is former CEO of Philips North America. He succeeds co-founder Neal Patterson, who died of cancer in July. With the move, co-founder Cliff Illig will step back from his roles as interim CEO and chairman and resume his position as vice chairman of t he North Kansas City-based health care IT company (Nasdaq: CERN).
