Yamamoto et  al1 retrospectively investigated postsurgical perforator infarction in patients with ruptured anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysms, especially focusing on the correlation of perforator infarction with clinical course during hospitalization and functional outcome 3 months after onset. The ir methodology consisted chiefly of 1) reviewing computed tomography scans obtained 24–48 hours after surgical clipping to examine the frequency of cortical and perforator infarction and 2) reviewing patient data to examine clinical outcomes at 3 months.

We present Shewanella algea infection in a chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) patient with cholesteatoma in terms of clinical course and treatment. This is the first time S. algea is found as solely pathogen in a CSOM patient without history of contact with seawater in Turkey. The patient admitted to the hospital several times with complaints of otorrhoea, was diagnosed as otitis media and treated. He was hospitalized to the otorhinolaryngology department for further evaluation of recurrent infections. The patient was diagnosed as cholesteatoma according to computed tomography scan findings and was operated for choles...

ConclusionsThe protocol developed in this study highlighted the morphologic evolution of the mandible around birth, identifying a different growth pattern from 2  postnatal weeks, probably because of the progressive activation of masticatory muscles and tongue. However, considering the small sample size, these results should be thorough, so identification and management of anatomic abnormalities could eventually be achieved.

This study evaluated the feasibility of using micro-computed tomography ( µCT) with Hexabrix to measure quantitatively sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) of engineered cartilage. Rabbit chondrocytes at passage 2 were used to produce artificial cartilages in polyglycolic acid scaffoldsin vitro. Engineered cartilages were incubated with Hexabrix 320 for 20  min and analyzed via µCT scanning. The number of voxels in the 2D and 3D scanning images were counted to estimate the amount of sulfated GAGs. The optimal threshold value for quantification was determined by regression analysis. The 2D µCT images of...

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the use of a novel bone graft delivery system would lead to significantly higher volumes of intra-cage BGM, compared to traditional cage filling methodology. The senior author performed a LLIF on a cadaveric spine in a traditional manner, which included hand-packing the cages with BGM and then inserting them into prepared disc spaces. A CT scan was performed and all BGM cage volumes were calculated. Next, attempts were made to inject additional quantities of BGM into the in situ cages, via the novel delivery system. A second CT was performed and new cage volumes of BGM were calc...

This study aims to quantify the volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) using computed tomography (CT) images and the two-compartment model (TCM) methods. Methods: The TCM method was proposed and validated by dipotassium phosphate (K2HPO4) phantoms and a standard forearm phantom. 28 cases with DXA scans and pelvic CT scans acquired within six months were retrospectively collected. The vBMD calculated by TCM was compared with the aBMD obtained from DXA. Results: For the K2HPO4 phantoms with vBMD ranging from 0.135 to 0.467 g/cm3, the average difference between the real and calculated vBMD was 0.009 g/...

AbstractBackgroundFor the past several years, increased levels of imaging radiation and cumulative radiation to children has been a significant concern. Although several measures have been taken to reduce radiation dose during computed tomography (CT) scan, the newer dose reduction software adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR) has been an effective technique in reducing radiation dose. To our knowledge, no studies are published that assess the effect of ASIR on extremity CT scans in children.ObjectiveTo compare radiation dose, image noise, and subjective image quality in pediatric lower extremity CT scans a...

AbstractPurposeTo investigate the relationship between sarcopenia with short-term surgical outcome in elderly patients with proximal femur fractures. Methods and materialsFollowing Institutional Review Board approval, a database of patients receiving a pelvis CT scan for acute trauma between January 2000 –August 2016 was screened for an isolated proximal femur fracture. Patients were excluded if they were:
