Psychiatric News is running a series on Physician Burnout, part of an initiative by APA President Dr. Anita Everett.  They asked me to write about medical licensing for the series, and in the course of writing the article, I spent a while talking to Dr. Luther Philaya, an Emergency Room doc who lost his license for his addiction to alcohol and opiates.  Dr. Philaya sought help and things did not go smoothly.  Instead of writing about licensing, I ended up writing about Luther, and I'll invite you to read, "System Changes Needed to Support Physician Seeking Help." Dr. Philaya had more to say ab...

View Original Article Here: How Long Does Shingles Last In The Elderly? Shingles is a viral infection that follows a varicella-zoster infection, although it can take decades for symptoms of the secondary disease to emerge. The condition presents as a painful and blistering rash, but it is not life-threatening. According to the Center for Disease Control, there are nearly one million cases in the United States each year, and almost half of those cases are in older adults over age 60. Some people only see one instance of the illness, while others have recurring symptoms, but 30 percent of Americans will develop shingles at s...

Conclusion Sea buckthorn is a unique plant. Its beneficial properties against cardiovascular disorders have been attributed to its high UFA content and range of phytosterols, especially beta-sitosterol. However, its different action on the human organism remain unclear, and further well-controlled, high-quality experiments with human subjects are required to determine the prophylactic and therapeutic doses of sea buckthorn oil for use in clinical studies. Additional studies are also needed to understand the action by which the oil exerts its beneficial properties, i.e. its cardioprotective and anti-cancer activity. Graphical abstract

I was ten when my mother had her first psychotic break. It was May. I was looking forward to lazy summer days at the pool, an art camp, a stack of Babysitters Club books, and daydreaming about my first crush, a boy with a splay of freckles and a mop of dark hair. Instead, I was forced to grow up too soon. This meant wearing deodorant and shaving my arm pits. It also meant seeing my mother in a state of complete psychosis, one in which she thought maybe she had killed the postman or the neighbor girl. “I didn’t. Mean. Tokillthepostman.” Her words were all wrong, strung together in a series of hiccups a...

One of the women I work with wanted to know about the new diet drug called Belviq. The FDA is always approving a new “miracle” weight-loss pill, only to recall it a few years later. To date, at least 34 diet drugs have been taken off the market. Diet pills cause all kinds of problems — heart attack, stroke and psychiatric disorders. And Belviq isn’t any different. Some of its side effects include suicidal thoughts, a racing heartbeat, hallucinations and more… The European Union banned Belviq. The reason? It causes cancer in animals.  And here’s the real irony… Clinical tri...

Editor’s note: One of the authors of this post, Peter Neumann, will be discussing issues related to the post at a Health Affairs September 13 event, “Understanding The Value of Innovations In Medicine.” In 1996, the U.S. Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine recommended that analysts conducting cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs) should perform a reference case analysis, following a set of standard methodological practices to improve comparability and quality. They further recommended that such analyses assume a societal perspective, reflecting the perspective of a decision make...
