Primary Psychiatric Manifestations of Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis: A Case Report and the Literature Review

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare progressive neurodegenerative condition, occurs with an incidence of 1 per million population in developed countries. However, it is occurring with an incidence of 21 cases per million in developing countries such as India. Though it can present with various non-specific behavioral problems along with a range of neurological manifestations at its onset, syndromal psychiatric diagnoses as sole manifestations rarely been reported. Hence here we are presenting a review of the literature on various primary psychiatric presentations of SSPE along with their management and a case report of a 17 years old boy, who had presented with a depressive episode during the onset of SSPE.
