Tinea capitis-like infection caused by Rhodotorula mucilaginosa in a Shelter for African Refugee Children in Northern Israel. Acta Trop. 2017 Dec 13;: Authors: Peretz A, Nitzan O, Freidus V, Kassem R Abstract Rhodotorula is a genus of unicellular pigmented yeasts, part of the division Basidiomycota. In this article, we report three cases of refugee children in a day care shelter in northern Israel who were clinically diagnosed and treated empirically as with ringworm infection but with clean and exclusive growth of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa in repeated cultures of several skin samples. Skin infections caused by this yeast are rare and there are few reports in the literature, mainly in patients who are immunocompromised. Here we report an infectious process of the scalp in immunocompetent children, caused by Rhodotorula mucilaginosa mimicking tinea capitis. PMID: 29247617 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
