MR Imaging-Guided Free-Handed Core-Needle Biopsies in the Breast

Well-established free-handed techniques —unconstrained by a needle-guide—that may be used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided abdominal biopsies and interventions are not commonly used for MRI-guided breast biopsies. MRI-guided interventions in the breast are performed using one of two available biopsy platforms: the grid syst em and the pillar-and-post system (1–4). The grid system requires needle placement to be orthogonal to the compression plate, and the pillar-and-post system only accommodates needle angulation up to 30 degrees.
