[2017 Round-up] Pain medicine gets personal

The opioid crisis has attracted increasing commentary during 2017. A recent study has shown that after surgery, in the USA, one in 16 patients will become a chronic opioid user.1 This number does not differ when comparing minor versus major surgery and largely represents inappropriate use of opioid analgesics triggered by overprescribing. This problem emphasises the need to optimise health-care delivery and to develop new, effective, and non-addictive drugs for the treatment of chronic pain.
