Rare Neurodegenerative Diseases: Clinical and Genetic Update. Adv Exp Med Biol. 2017;1031:443-496 Authors: Matilla-Dueñas A, Corral-Juan M, Rodríguez-Palmero Seuma A, Vilas D, Ispierto L, Morais S, Sequeiros J, Alonso I, Volpini V, Serrano-Munuera C, Pintos-Morell G, Álvarez R, Sánchez I Abstract More than 600 human disorders afflict the nervous system. Of these, neurodegenerative diseases are usually characterised by onset in late adulthood, progressive clinical course, and neuronal loss with regional specificity in the central nervous system. They include Alzheimer's disease and other less frequent dementias, brain cancer, degenerative nerve diseases, encephalitis, epilepsy, genetic brain disorders, head and brain malformations, hydrocephalus, stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease), Huntington's disease, and Prion diseases, among others. Neurodegeneration usually affects, but is not limited to, the cerebral cortex, intracranial white matter, basal ganglia, thalamus, hypothalamus, brain stem, and cerebellum. Although the majority of neurodegenerative diseases are sporadic, Mendelian inheritance is well documented. Intriguingly, the clinical presentations and neuropathological findings in inherited neurodegenerative forms are often indistinguishable from those of sporadic cases, suggesting that converging genomic signatures and pathophysiologic mechanisms und...

Authors: Pitkänen A, Alanen HM, Kampman O, Leinonen E Abstract BACKGROUND: Dementia is associated with progressive deterioration in multiple cognitive domains, functional impairment and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS). AIMS: The aim of this study was to explore the factors associated with the outcome of NPS and daily functioning in patients with dementia during acute psychogeriatric hospitalization. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The data (n = 175) were collected between 2009 and 2013 in naturalistic settings on one acute psychogeriatric ward at one university hospital in Finland. Behavioural symp...

Initially, the E-form and AZ31 Mg alloys had different crystallographic textures and average grain-size distributions. Direct observation of microstructural evolution during the ex-situ mini-V-bending tests was experimentally observed via electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. The EBSD results revealed how twin bands (TBs) developed ...

This study aimed to compare the effect of airborne PM10 (PM with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 µm) on in vitro global methylation in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). PM10 was sampled in metropolitan Tehran, the capital of Iran. PBMCs were extracted from whole blood of healthy males and treated with PM10 suspension at concentrations of 50-300 μg/mL for 4 hr. Untreated cells were used as the negative control. Genomic DNA was extracted from each sample using the DNA blood mini kit according to the manufacturer’s instruction. Moreover, 5-methylsytosine (%5-mC) and 5-hydroxyme...

This study retrospectively assessed the clinical and biological parameters of 223 patients with advanced NSCLC. Univariate and multivariate analyses of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) for the parameters and the prognostic score were assessed. RESULTS Performance status (PS) score=1, smoking history, fibrinogenemia, thrombocytosis, increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level, and anemia were independent predictors of poor prognosis in the univariate analysis of OS and were assessed in multivariate analysis. There was a significant difference in PS=1 (HR=2.134, p

CONCLUSIONS We reported here the identification of functional lncRNAs in KIRC via a TCGA data-based bioinformatics analysis. We believe that this study might contribute to improving the comprehension of the lncRNA-mediated ceRNA regulatory mechanisms in the tumorigenesis of KIRC. Meanwhile, our results suggested that 4 lncRNAs might act as potential therapeutic targets or candidate prognostic biomarkers in KIRC. PMID: 30444862 [PubMed - in process]
