Scientist's accidental exhale leads to improved DNA detector

(University of Rochester) Researchers at the Universities of Rochester and Ottawa have developed a novel nanoscale device for detecting DNA biomarkers. The device, described in Nano Letters, preconfines translocating molecules using an ultrathin nanoporous silicon nitride membrane separated from a single sensing nanopore by a nanoscale cavity. The membrane serves as a pre-filter and improves the DNA sensing capabilities of the nanopore in multiple ways. The article will be featured on the cover the February issue of the high impact journal Nano Letters.
