Two rare presentations of rare endobronchial leiomyoma from a single centre

Endobronchial leiomyomas belong to a rare group of endobronchial tumors accounting for less than 2% of endobronchial tumors. The majority of lung leiomyomas are parenchymal (51%), endobronchial (33%) and endotracheal (16%). Literature regarding leiomyoma is scarce with very few cases being reported. These tumors arise from smooth muscle. Two different rare clinical presentations of lung leiomyoma were observed at a same respiratory clinic and is being reported.Case 1:Non HIV female aged 42 years presented with features of acute interstitial pneumonia. When subjected for bronchoscopy it revealed multiple endobronchial swellings. Histopathological examination of these lesions showed features of leiomyoma & immunohistochemistry demostrating diffuse cytoplasmic reactivity for smooth muscle actin and desmin.Case 2:Non HIV young male aged 18 years presented with complete collapse of right lung. He was suspected to be a case of foriegn body in right main bronchus. Bronchoscopy was done. It showed presence of hard endobronchial growth at carina causing complete obstruction of right main bronchus. Biopsy of the mass showed presence of smooth muscle neoplasm confirmed by immunohistochemistry as leiomyoma. The mass appered to be originating from smooth muscle of right pulmonary artery, hitheto unreported in literature. These two cases of leiomyoma being reported from same centre had different rare presenting features of acute interstitial pneumonia and being originating from smooth mu...
