Quantification of Osmotic Water Transport in vivo using Fluorescent Albumin.

Quantification of Osmotic Water Transport in vivo using Fluorescent Albumin. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2014 Aug 6; Authors: Morelle J, Sow A, Vertommen D, Jamar F, Rippe B, Devuyst O Abstract Osmotic water transport across the peritoneal membrane is applied during peritoneal dialysis to remove the excess of water accumulated in patients with end-stage renal disease. The discovery of aquaporin water channels and the generation of transgenic animals have stressed the need for novel and accurate methods to unravel molecular mechanisms of water permeability in vivo. Here we describe the use of fluorescently-labeled albumin as reliable indicator of osmotic water transport across the peritoneal membrane in a well-established mouse model of peritoneal dialysis. After detailed evaluation of the intraperitoneal tracer mass kinetics, the technique was validated against direct volumetry, considered as gold standard. The pH-insensitive dye AlexaFluor555-albumin was applied to quantify osmotic water transport across the mouse peritoneal membrane resulting from modulating dialysate osmolality and genetic silencing of the water channel AQP1. Quantification of osmotic water transport using AlexaFluor(555)-albumin closely correlated with direct volumetry and with estimations based on radio-iodinated ((125)I) serum albumin (RISA). The low intraperitoneal pressure probably accounts for the negligible disappearance of the tracer from the peritoneal cavity in this model. T...

CONCLUSION: Enterococcus spp. with susceptibility to limited antibiotics was one of the main pathogens in Korean IAIs, along with E. coli and Klebsiella spp., which were highly susceptible to imipenem, amikacin, and piperacillin/tazobactam. Meanwhile, the low susceptibilities of E. coli or Klebsiella spp. to amoxicillin/clavulanate, advanced-generation cephalosporins, and ciprofloxacin should be considered when determining empirical antibiotic therapy in clinical practice. A 34 year-old female with Stage V chronic kidney disease secondary to a history of sickle cell anemia and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and on peritoneal dialysis presented to our hospital for imaging as part of routine evaluation for renal transplant. Upon receiving an MRI of the abdomen to evaluate liver architecture and kidney anatomy, a 6.6 cm left perinephric mass was incidentally found inferomedial to the left kidney and extending caudally (Figure 1). The renal parenchyma and ureter were uninvolved.

CONCLUSION: There is a high CKD burden in the ME countries. There needs to be emphasis on prevention of ESRD and provision of adequate care for the total ESRD patient population. National renal registries are needed to monitor the status of ESRD patients. Health expenditures should be increased to cover all aspects of RRT in ME Countries. We present our initial experience with modified transoral endoscopic parathyroidectomy vestibular approach (m-TOEPVA) procedure for SHPT using total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 10 patients with SHPT who underwent the m-TOEPVA procedure from December 2017 to April 2018 at our center. Results: There were a total of 6 male individuals and 4 female individuals with a median age of 58.5 years. Among whom, 5 were on hemodialysis and 5 on peritoneal dialysis. The median length of hospital stay and operative time was 5 (4, 5) days, and 321.5 (302.75, 362.25) ...
