Higher Education Research and Development: Fiscal Year 2016

The tables present data for the FY 2016 Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey, from the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) within the National Science Foundation. Data are provided on R&D expenditures at higher education institutions across all academic disciplines. Tables include R&D expenditures by institution, R&D field, geographic area, source of funds, type of work (basic research, applied research, and experimental development), cost categories (salaries, software, equipment, and indirect costs), and trends over time. Additionally for FY 2016, the fields of research and development were revised to better reflect the R&D currently conducted at universities and colleges, and to ensure comparability of HERD survey fields across NCSES surveys and with the Department of Education ' s Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes.
