Interview with Roberta W. Scherer, PhD, and Craig Formby, PhD, authors of Effect of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy vs Standard of Care on Tinnitus-Related Quality of Life: A Randomized Clinical Trial
This Viewpoint discusses the history of the Tinnitus Retraining Therapy Trial and the challenges encountered in conducting a phase 3 randomized clinical trial involving all major branches of the military.
This randomized clinical trial compares the efficacy of tinnitus retraining therapy and its components, sound therapy and tinnitus-specific educational counseling, with the standard of care on tinnitus-related quality of life.
Against poor odds, Formby and colleagues managed to receive federal grant funding for a multisite clinical trial, to access and convince military investigators to join in this trial, to select rigorous measures and methods when no objective tinnitus measurement exists, and to gain approvals from all levels of regulatory and local command authority oversight bodies across 6 military treatment facilities before they could start their effort to complete the Tinnitus Retraining Therapy Trial (TRTT), described by Scherer and Formby in this issue ofJAMA Otolaryngology –Head&Neck Surgery. In just shy of 20 years from th...

Authors: Rivera M, Porras-Segovia A, Rovira P, Molina E, Gutiérrez B, Cervilla J Abstract BACKGROUND: Life expectancy of people with depression is on average 15 years less than that of the general population. This excess of mortality is largely attributed to a deteriorated physical health. Evidence about the association between major depressive disorder (MDD) and physical health is still lacking in some areas. The aim of this study was to explore the association between MDD and physical health-related variables in southern Spain. METHODS: The PISMA-ep is a cross-sectional study based on community-dwellin...
In this study we hypothesized that the alleviation of neurological symptoms long after internal carotid artery (ICA) stenting may be related to sustained improvement of cerebral perfusion. Thirty-four subjects (F/M; 15/19) with>70% stenosis of a single internal carotid artery and neurological symptoms, who underwent a carotid artery stenting procedure, were studied. Brain computed tomography perfusion (CTP) imaging was performed before and 3 years after ICA stenting. The following relative variables were compared: cerebral blood flow (rCBF), cerebral blood volume (rCBV), mean transit time (rMTT), time to peak (rTTP...
