In this study, we evaluated a prototype bipolar RFA device applicator that can be deployed from a standard endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) bronchoscope to determine feasibility and histopathological analysis in animal models. Rabbit lung cancers were created by transbronchial injection of VX2 rabbit cancer cells. Once the tumors were developed, they were ablated transpleurally, under EBUS guidance using the prototype RFA device.

Abstract In the diagnosis of lung cancer, pulmonologists have several tools at their disposal. From the tried and true convex probe endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)-guided transbronchial needle aspiration to robotic bronchoscopy for peripheral lesions and new technology to unblind the biopsy tools, this article elucidates and expounds on the tools currently available and being developed for lung cancer diagnosis. We examined the association of diagnostic yield with individual variables using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses where appropriate. RESULTS: 687 were included from 28 sites. Overall diagnostic yield is 69%; 80% for EBUS, 55% for Bronch-BX and 57% for EMN and 74% for combination procedures (p

We present the case of an asymptomatic woman, a chronic heavy smoker, who presented with an incidental lung mass and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Bronchoscopy with transbronchial biopsy and endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration did not show malignancy. A positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan showed increased uptake with a standardized uptake value of 26.4 in the mediastinal lymph node and an additional hypermetabolic right supraclavicular lymph node. Surgical biopsy of the supraclavicular node revealed non-necrotizing granuloma. Discussion of the clinical dilemma is provided. ...

Authors: Li N, Peng Y, Chen Y, Lv Y, Xu G, Ruan T Abstract BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to analyze the diagnostic value of thin bronchoscopy lung biopsy for peripheral pulmonary lesions under non-real-time guidance of radial ultrasound (RP-EBUS). MATERIAL AND METHODS We used a retrospective analysis of ultrasound images of 165 patients with peripheral pulmonary disease admitted to Suzhou Municipal Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University from February 2016 to December 2018 who were given RP-EBUS examination. Ultrasound images were obtained for all patients. There were 76 patients treated using trad...

AbstractFailure to manage bleeding in the airway is an important cause of airway-related death. The purpose of this narrative review is to identify techniques and strategies that can be employed when severe bleeding in the upper airway may render traditional airway management (e.g., facemask ventilation, intubation via direct/video laryngoscopy, flexible  bronchoscopy) impossible because of impeded vision. An extensive literature search was conducted of bibliographic databases, guidelines, and textbooks using search terms related to airway management and bleeding. We identified techniques that establish a definitive a...
